Situation

The idea for Situation began during the clashes in Yemen in 2011. What surprised me most during those days was how strongly people tried to continue with ordinary life despite the instability around them.

A wedding could still take place in a city where clashes were happening in nearby streets, and where electricity was available for only a few hours a day. People kept gathering, celebrating, working and moving through their routines.

But carrying on did not mean that everything felt normal. The situation was still visible in people’s faces, in their appearance and the way they dressed, and in the emotions they could not fully hide. Despite their efforts to continue with ordinary life, fear, tension and uncertainty remained present.

Situation looks at this contrast: the effort to continue everyday life while the weight of what was happening remained present and impossible to completely conceal.
